David Koma: NewGen credits designers at London Fashion Week
If there is one thing that makes the fashion industry in London the most vibrant and interesting in the world, it is the support it gives to emerging design talent. Paris may be king of couture and Milan has the monopoly on luxury brands but when it comes to discovering the next big names, London is a great place to find it.
Whatever way you look at it, fashion is a dog-eat-dog world. Highly competitive, relentless and at times pretty damn brutal. Trying to break into this industry is no simple task, no matter how talented you are. But the innovative schemes in place to help the brightest young graduates launch their own lines means that if it's hot-off-the-press fashion your after, London is THE place to be.
Of all these initiatives, New Generation (NewGen) was the first which was launched in 1993, the scheme is still going strong and if it's exhibition at LFW was anything to go by, NewGen may just be getting stronger by the season.
Anyone with even an ounce of fashion nous will have heard the name David Koma. I personally am honoured to have worked with David Koma pieces at my internship at Modus Publicity. His designs are beyond unique with ballerina esque theme in AW10 but more vibrant and colourful in his SS11 collection.
Since his graduate collection picked up the Harrods Design Award last season and his debut show managed to gather one of THE hottest front rows around (think Kate Moss, people!), the Georgian born designer has gone from strength to strength in his success. His first batch of hotter-than-hot sculptural dresses won David high profile fans ranging from Cheryl Cole to Lady Gaga. So as you can imagine, expectations were running pretty high as the fashion world awaited the young designers second collection.
With SS11 London Fashion Week approaching soon, it will be interesting to see which new designers will appear at the fashion show. I will be working at London Fashion week and keeping an eye out for NewGen designers but more importantly I will assisting at David Koma's which i am very much looking forward to!
